Blood Doners

Are you a blood donor?

If you are going to have an operation, you may be able to recommence donating after you have recovered (contact the Blood Service to find out because it depends on the surgery you had and the reason for it).

But, if you are given a donor blood transfusion, you will NEVER be able to donate again. Make sure that you let the surgeon and anaesthetist know that you want to avoid a transfusion from another donor.

It costs the NHS a lot of money to recruit and retain donors and if a donor can be “saved” by NOT having a transfusion, then this cash could be better used elsewhere. Not to mention the advantages for you, the patient! (see elsewhere on this site for advantages of Intra-operative Cell Salvage). Patient Information
